In Camp, Inspection at 9 A.M. Eating Oysters & having a good Time
Sold my ring for 1 dol. Slacked arms on the color line at 5 P.M. Times
good Weather Clear & Cool
MONDAY 2
Reveille at 6 A.M. After breakfast I went to the Roundhouse at
Savannah and got a piece of iron for an arch in a fireplace Raised our
tent & built a fireplace bought a pack of Envelopes for 60 cts.
Times good Weather fair.
TUESDAY 3
Reveille & Roll call at 6 A.M. Cleaned up the Street & our
tent this A.M. Went to City this P.M. bought articles to the amt. of 4
75/100 Dols Times good Weather fair & warm
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 4, 1865.
Reveille at 5 A.M. Started out on a guard Detail went 8 miles from
Camp on the Coast R.R. to guard Cattle Co. A & F on Picket Co. F
at the Potter farm on the Savannah river Some Cang. N.E. of us Times
good Weather fair & hot
THURSDAY 5
Went up to the upper mill Seen a negro 80 years old & a native of
Africa also a negress 100 ys. old. Relieved at 12.30 went to the lower
mill & Stoped 1 hour & then went to Camp arriving at Camp at 4
P.M. Times lively Weather fair & warm
FRIDAY 6
Reveille at 6 A.M. Looked over Some papers And wrote a letter to M. A.
Myers nothing going on Times as usual Weather variable will rain
SATURDAY, JANUARY 7, 1865.
Reveille at the usual hour On a detail. Went to Potters farm got there
at 11:30 A.M. Calked a boat & Launched it but it leaked So that we
could not use it Started to Camp 1 hour by Sun got in at 6:30 P.M.

In Camp Roll Call at the usual hour. Cleared my gun for Inspection
which came off at 9 A.M. Stacked our guns on the Color line After
inspection got up Some wood Nothing going on worthy of note Times as

MONDAY 9
Reveille at 5 A.M. went to work on the fortifications at the City
Commenced work at 8 A.M. Went to City in P.M. Bought rice for 2 $
& bread for & 1. Started home at 4 P.M. I was in the Cemetry (
maybe century?) Times good Weather Cloudy with rain
TUESDAY, JANUARY 10, 1865.
In Camp Reveille at the usual hour Nothing going on. Times as usual

Reveille at the usual hour Started to move Camp at 9 A.M. at the City
on fatigue put up our tent & built a fine place & Some bunks
Times good bought a Silver ring for 3 Dols. Sold pens & holder for
20 cts. Weather fair & warm
FRIDAY, JANUARY 13, 1865.
In Camp & on fatigue Put up our Bunks so (?) Nothing going one
except fixing up our New Camp Times As usual gnab (?) rice &

In Camp got Some moss for a bed and some wood went to City and bought
a diary & can of peaches & some corn bread Times good ec (?)

In Camp on fatigue Drew rations Renched my back got orders to leave on
a raid every thing going on right every one in town was examined by
the board of Surgeons in regard to my back Times good & lively

Roll call at the usual hour reported to the Dr and got Some linament
for my back Seen Bill Clayter xe. (?) Went to City in the afternoon
got the news that Ft Fisher is taken with 76 guns & 1780 prisoners

THURSDAY, JANUARY 19, 1865.
In Camp Regiment went on picket at 8 A.M. I was excused by the Dr. on
account of my back there was a Salute of 38 guns fired in honor of
late victories Report current that Wilmington & Charleston are
taken Times good. Weather Cloudy & very rainy
FRIDAY 20
Left Savannah at 10 AM. on an other campaign Started up the Ga.
Central R.R. Went 8 miles & then went into Camp for the night J
Choats on a Detail as pioneer (maybe prisoner ?) rail came in but
nothing for Co F Times pretty rough, Weather Cloudy with very heavy
rain all day

In Camp, eight miles from Savannah Received a letter from S. N. (?)
Miller Nothing going on. Times dull. Weather Dark gloomy and heavy
rain nearly all day Report that Jno Fletcher is dead
SUNDAY, JANUARY 22, 1865.
In Camp eight miles N. W. of Savannah Nothing going on. Wrote two
letters one to Saml. M. (or N.) Miller & the other to Bruce
& Preston Washington DC Times rather gloomy Weather A.M. Cloudy
P.M. cloudy with rain
MONDAY 23
In the Same old mud hole or camp yet nothing going on every thing
quiet Sent the mail off Official reports of Fort Fisher 72 cannon and
2500 prisoners Yankee Colburn returned to Co A & Luient Fuller to

TUESDAY 24
In Camp at the eight mile post on the Lousville road. Nothing going on
Cleaned my gun. All quiet in front. Times as usual. Weather clear but
rather cool wind.
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 25, 1865.
Started on the march at 7 A.M. Marching on the LouisvilleRoad toward
Springfield Marched about 16 miles & then went into camp for the
night. Sold my Ring to J B Taylor for $5- next pay day Times good
Weather Fair but cold Roads pretty good (crossing?)
THURSDAY 26
Reveille at 5 A.M. marched at 7.30 2nd Brigd in the rear Went into
camp at 4 P.M. At Springfield 3rd Brigd had a skirmish with the Rebs
Drew three days rations Times good Weather fair but cold Roads pretty
bad
FRIDAY 27
Reveille at 5 A.M. marched at 7 A.M. After marching 2 ½ miles we had
to wade the Ebineezer river about 150 yds. wide the water being very
cold & from 2 to 3 feet deep. After crossing we marched 2 ½ miles
& went into camp for the night Times good Weather clear but cold

Reveille at 5.30 A.M. and marched at 8 A.M. 2nd Brigd. in the lead

Reveille at the usual hour cut some wood & got it up ground the
Morgan axe Fletcher went out to forrage & got Some beef. Times as

after supper I went to the 92 Ills. had a good time in general Dike

In Camp at the Ferry (crossing?) Dike Johnson Started home this
morning Uggalion (?) was here Some of our boys were over with the 92

Beard. two boats came in while I was at the river. Got back to Camp at

On picket troops all across the river except our Regt. & 5 Cos. of
the 59th Ind. Passed away the time reading novels. Times dull &

On picket reading novels to pass away time 5 men & two non commish
went down to the river to guard the road crossed the river at 10 P.M.
Drew clothing and received mail recd 1 letter from T Billmire & 1

Reveile at 5 AM marched at 7 Stoped at 10 AM and built Some Corduroy

Reveile at 5 A.M. marched at 7 marched 12 miles and then took dinner

Reveille at the usual hour marched at 6.30 A.M. 34th Liis leading the
Division fixed Some road a.m. passed through Williston on the
Charleston & Augusta rail Road at 10 :30 A.M. recd 1 20 for
dinner Went into Ccamp at the South Edisto River marched 17 miles

Got up at 7 A.M. Started on the march at 11 A.M. 2nd Brigd. in the
rear of the Div Crossed the South Edisto river & marched about 7
miles & then went into Camp for the night Drew 1 days Rations

Roll call at 4 A.M. marched at 6 A.M. Crossed the North Edisto river
at 10.30 A.M. Stoped at the river for dinner Started out at 1 P.M.

Reveille at 4 A.M. marched at 6 A.M. Crossed the Saluda river at 8
A.M. Stoped 1 hour for dinner marched again at 1 P.M. Went into camp

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 1865.
Reveille at the usual hour Crosssed Broad river at 7.30 A.M. Went
foraging captured 2 Rebs also a lot of horses and mules 2 of Co. As
boys captured Comp A & F Went out on a Scout Brgd moved out on the
line & fortified Rebs crossing above us marched Some 8 miles
Weather is fair
SUNDAY 19
Reville at 5 A.M. marched at 7 A.M. marched 3 miles & then went
into Camp Went down on the R.R. & burned it. It being 4 miles
Nothing going on marched 11 miles this day Weather fair & warm
MONDAY 20
Reveille at 5 AM marched at 7 am rear of the whole train Went into
Camp at 1 P.M. Went back after Sweet potatoes & corn marched 6

Winnsborro & then countermarched & took a left hand road Went

Winsborro left the R.R. at White oak Station & took the Camden

Got up to breakfast after daylight Seen highreim Edmonds of the 92nd

In Camp Struck tents at 12 M. Crossed the great Pedee at 7.30 PM nine

Relieved from picket at 8 AM Went to Camp Wrote two letters & Sent

Struck tents at 6 A.M. marched 2 miles & went into Camp nothing

TUESDAY, MARCH 14, 1865.
In Camp, Two miles north west of Fayetteville N. C. UG Gallion was
here. Reported that Richmond is evacuated & Lee gone to East Tenn.
Received Some N.Y. papers in Camp Weather variable with Rain

Started on the march at 9 A.M. Started out on the Raleigh Road Some
cdng. on our Right. Weather rainy marched 12 miles
THURSDAY 16
Marched at 6 A.M. marched 6 miles & then went on the Skirmishline
J.H. Gull & D Merrick were killed & J Blanchard & C Taylor
wounded in Co F E Palmer Saml. Miller & Caughman were wounded in
Co A Weather Rainy
FRIDAY, MARCH 17, 1865.
Went out & burried J H Gull and David Merrick, and then went back
to Camp Started to march at 11 A.M. marched 2 miles miles & got
dinner Started at 2 P.M. & marched 7 miles wading four Streams.
Ervin Palmer died of his wound St Patricks day Weather fair & warm
marched 9 miles
SATURDAY 18
Marched at daylight running on to the Rebs after marching 10 miles
34th on the Skirmishline advanced about 2 miles & drove them out
of their position & then Stoped the remainder of the day 34 on
picket plenty of meat. Within 25 miles of Goldsborro Weather fair
& warm
SUNDAY 19
Reveille at 4.30 a.m. Marched at 8 A.M. heavy skirmishing in our front
& Some candng. Marched up where the 1st Div was engaged &
formed a line on the left hand side of the road 1st Div was repulsed
being flanked on the left Changed front on 10(?) Co. Threw up light
works when Hokes Div. Charged our Brigade we repulsed them in galant
Style & heavy loss casults. Co. F N.W.Wright killed wounded L S
Ellis mortally A Fish & J B Taylor Slightly. Co F captured 12
prisoners lost 27 men in the Regt. marched marched 6 miles Weather
Clear & very hot Bought a ring from a Reb of the 27th ga. For 25
cts said to come from Ft Sumter S.C.
MONDAY, MARCH 20, 1865.
Advanced the Skirmishline in the morning Sent L S Ellis to the Hoptl.
Burried N.W. Wright. 12 M. Changed direction & advanced the lines
to the first line of the Rebs work they having fell back during the
night to their second line Alb. Hardesty & D. Cole came back to
the Co. drew 2 days rations tack & coffee Weather fair & hot.

Hospital L.S. Ellis still alive went back to the Dr. to get Some

Rebs are all gone this morning at daylight. marched out into an open
field & Slacked arms Started at 11 A.M. for Goldsborro. Seen Some
Buffaloes marched 10 miles & then went into Camp for the night
close to the Neuse River where the 24th Corps lay in Camp Seen UG

THURSDAY, MARCH 23, 1865.
Started On the march at 7 A.M. Crossed the Neuse River at 9 A.M. 20
minutes for dinner. Passed through Goldsborro on Review at 4 P.M. Went
out into Camp 1 1/2 miles East of town Seen Orin Hurod(?) marched 13
miles. Weather clear but very windy From Savannnah ga to Goldsborro NC

Started to march at 6 A.M. Went through Clayton and also through
Raleigh the Capital of N.C. Avery nice little City 34th lead the Div
Weather Cloudy with rain Marched 16 miles Goldsborro to Raleigh 50 ms.

Sad, Sad, news mingled in with the Surrender which is the
assassination of Lincoln & Seward Our Nation has Sustained a loss
that is irreparable & it casts a deep gloom uppon the hearts of
the Soldiers. It Sounds in my ears nearly as bad as if it were the

Jo Johnson surrendered 36000 men to Sherman. Times dull. Weather fair

In Camp. got Some more Recruits for the Regt. playing Chess again took
a Staven wash. It is Officially announced that Jo Johnson Surrendered
all the forces east of the Mississippi to Sherman this morning Times
